THECHALLENGE
Blue Tomato needed a customer-oriented way to rent snowboarding equipment online — one that could simplify the rental process, boost convenience and give riders access to top-quality gear, with personalised filtering and a seamless checkout.

THESOLUTION
Rent Your Ride — a four-step web app (location + date, delivery, product selection, checkout) built on TypeScript, React and Next.js. Google Maps picks the location, filters narrow the gear, session storage keeps progress, and Rentsoft powers a frictionless checkout.

At Mashed, we absolutely love sharing overviews of our projects, so we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to show you the result of our collaboration with Blue Tomato GmbH on the Rent Your Ride (further referred to as “RYR”) snowboard-rental web app. Hold on tight as we take you on the journey and reveal the features and functionality of this innovative collaboration.
Rent Your Ride — the snowboard-rental flow, start to finish
Before we dive into the project, a big shout-out to the stakeholder team on the Blue Tomato side — from Software Development to Marketing. We worked together with these incredible people for months, elaborating and raising the new Rent Your Ride platform with passion. Without the great collaboration, RYR wouldn’t be today’s snowboard-rental service.
Project Aims
The main goal of the collaboration between Blue Tomato and Mashed was to develop a customer-oriented online snowboard-equipment rental service. The goals of the RYR platform: simplify the rental process, boost convenience, and provide users with access to top-quality equipment. The project aimed to integrate advanced features such as personalized filtering options and a seamless checkout process to provide a superb rental experience.
The User Flow
To make the rental process seamless, we broke the user flow into four distinct steps.
1 · Select your location and date
Upon landing on the RYR platform, your journey begins by selecting your location and the date for your snowboarding adventure. We integrated the Google Maps API to allow for easy location selection, and included intelligent recommendations.
Step 1 — location and date, with smart recommendations
2 · Choose your delivery option
After settling on the location and date, you can choose how you’d like to receive your gear: delivered straight to your doorstep, or picked up from a rental store. To simplify this decision, our platform offers store recommendations based on the location you previously selected, ensuring convenience and accessibility.
Step 2 — delivery or in-store pickup, with smart store recommendations
3 · Select your products
Now you’re ready to choose your gear from a range of high-quality snowboarding equipment. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, the platform’s filters for size, riding level, style, brand and other preferences help you find the gear that perfectly suits your needs and riding style.
Step 3 — filter by size, level, style and brand
4 · Checkout
Finally, once selected, you proceed to a seamless checkout. Our headless backend system interacts with the frontend, allowing you to choose your preferred payment method for a frictionless transaction. The system uses Rentsoft for secure, reliable payments — a smooth, user-friendly checkout experience.

Technical Dive
The RYR platform is a testament to our technical approach to problem-solving. Built using TypeScript and React, it incorporates Next.js for server-side rendering — enhancing the website’s performance and SEO.
To provide a user-centric experience, we used Session Storage to store users’ progress. This HTML5 Web Storage API offers an easy way to store data persistently in a user’s browser, allowing the customer to pick up where they left off and making their experience on the platform more seamless.
And of course, the platform is fully responsive. Whether you’re planning your next snowboarding adventure on a laptop, tablet or mobile device, you can expect an optimal user experience on every screen size.
In Closing
We’re immensely proud of what we achieved in this collaboration with Blue Tomato GmbH. The RYR project reflects our dedication to providing the best user experiences by combining innovative software solutions with a clear understanding of our client’s needs.
Lastly, we thank Blue Tomato for trusting us with this remarkable project — here’s to making the snowboarding experience smoother, one ride at a time.
